    If you're going to do any sod work at all, says show host Kim Haworth, use the proper tool: a serated sod cutter (figure A). It has a ridged blade at the bottom and is beveled on the back. To cut into sod, press your foot on the sod cutter the same way you would a shovel, and hack into the soil until you hear the roots ripping. The bevel will keep you from digging too deep. Cut a square of sod, then run the shovel underneath and pick it up. Carry it where you want it, grass side up, on the bowl of the sod cutter (figure B).
