Now that your property's measurements have been taken, make a graph. - Using graph paper. make a drawing of your property.
- Transfer the measurements to the drawing (figure A).
Note: The scale of our chart is 1 square equals 2.5 feet; therefore, 4 squares equals 10 feet. - Draw on the street, sidewalk and house, etc.
- Add flowerbeds, trees and other landscaping elements (figure B).
You'll also need to determine the kind of drainage your soil had so that you don't over water or underwater and damage your plants. This step requires two "tools": a bucket full of water and a 12" round (and deep) hole in the ground. Simply pour the bucketful of water into the hole and wait to see how long it takes to leach into the soil. If it absorbs too quickly, it's too porous; too slowly, and you'll have to watch how much water you use on your yard -- you don't want to give it too much. And if there seem to be drainage problems, you'll need to call an expert in to help.
