    Tips:

    • Pointing along the blade of your saw with your index finger will give you straighter and more precise cuts.

    • To avoid a "splitting" headache when cutting plywood, apply a strip of masking tape.

    • After installing a new windowpane, allow the glazing compound to cure for at least a week before painting it. Overlap the paint slightly onto the glass to seal the bond.

    • To keep your house cooler in the summer, install shades, awnings or sun screens on windows facing south and/or west to block light.

    • Heat loss through windows can account for 10 percent to 25 percent of your heating bills. Consider replacing single-pane windows with high-performance double-pane models to make your home more energy efficient.
