Golden plans to utilize all the walls of the sunroom -- including the ceiling, which she calls the fifth wall. She wants to add a grasscloth wallpaper to the ceiling, giving it a thatched-hut look. Woven grass is typically mounted to a heavier paper, and it can be difficult to install.

Note: At this point in the project, it would be a good idea to have an extra set of hands.

    1. Prepare the ceiling by making any repairs. Any dirt and debris on the ceiling can keep the wallpaper from sticking properly.

    2. Prime the entire surface with acrylic primer (figure A).

    3. Measure the ceiling: this will help to determine how to apply the wallpaper. It may be a good idea to snap a chalk line for a reference point.

    4. Roll out the first length and apply wallpaper adhesive (figure B). Remember to work on a large flat surface, and don't press too hard when applying the adhesive as it could damage the woven grass.

    5. Allow at least five minutes for adhesive to get tacky.

    6. Press the first length of paper carefully into place on the ceiling.

    7. Use a wallpaper smoothing brush and work over a foot at a time.

    8. Cut the next length from the roll, allowing 3" to 6" on each end for pattern matching.

    9. Repeat steps 5-8 as often as necessary until entire ceiling is wallpapered.

    10. Use a trim guard (figure C) to make sure the wallpaper fits securely.

    11. Trim any excess wallpaper with a utility knife.

    12. Use a damp cloth (figure D) to remove excess adhesive on the walls.

Note:Make sure to cut holes for the ceiling fixtures.

    13. Cut 1x4 (figure E) strips of wood according to the room measurements.

Woodworking expert John Haas suggests sanding trim with a fine-grade sandpaper so paint will attach smoothly to it.

    14. Install trim boards around the perimeter of the ceiling.

    15. Secure 1x4 (widthwise) boards across the ceiling to create boxes. The number will vary depending on ceiling length. Continue until the ceiling has been framed.
