    Figure B

Time: 20 hours over 2 days.

Difficulty Rating: This project rates a 4 on the Weekend Handyman scale.

A garden window can cost anywhere from $15,000 to $25,000.

    Materials:

    Garden Window (figure A)

    Power miter saw
    Reciprocating saw
    Pry bar
    Screw gun and drill bits
    Level
    Hammer or power nailer
    Insulation
    Fan fold insulation
    Black roofing paper
Special flashing tape to seal window
    House wrap
    Suction cups

Note: The Garden Window is an all-vinyl window with energy-efficient insulated glass. These windows come in wood and other forms, but the vinyl is the most popular choice because it stands up to weather well.

Tip: Check with your local municipality to see if you need a permit for this project.

    Day One

    Measuring Opening

Determine the size of the window by estimating the rough opening -- take the measurement from the inside extension jamb on one side to the inside of the extension jamb on the other side and add two inches. Order the window.

Note: You need to plan enough time to order the window. The units can take several weeks to manufacture and deliver. Some companies custom make garden windows to fit the exact size you need. Other companies, such as CertainTeed, have stock sizes and you will need to order dimensions that are close to your existing rough opening.

Gather all your tools and materials.

    1. Remove the old window by using a reciprocating saw to cut through the side jambs.

    2. Cut to the edge of the trim being careful not to cut into the siding.

    3. Slice through the caulk between the trim and the siding.

    4. With a pry bar, loosen and remove the pieces of the trim out (figure B). Remove the aluminum nailing fin.

Tip: Do not save the trim, it is easier to replace it.
