To install the window, first apply a bead of caulking around the framed opening (figure A); then set the window into place. Use a level to make sure the window is level. If it isn't, use a carpenter's wedge or shim (figure B) to raise one side as necessary. Then add the fasteners to the inside and outside, starting in the center of each side of the frame and working your way around. Sliding Glass Door Installation The sliding glass doors used in this demonstration have several features that make them a big improvement over similar doors. For instance, the doors feature a block (figure C) that prevents them from being lifted out of the track and thus broken into. They also have improved, replaceable stainless-steel tracks (figure D) that help keep the homeowner from having to replace the entire door because of a faulty track. Construct the door frame in the same way that you constructed the window frame, including making both cripples and a header. First run a bead of sealant across the foundation (figure E), then lift the door into place (figure F) and fasten the frame to the existing wall studs (figure G).
