With the keystone accents secured in the cherry frame, the finishing steps in completion of the wall mirror include mounting the actual glass mirror and back panel, and applying a wood finish. The mirror glass was cut at a glass shop from 3/16" stock. The exact diameter was specified, and the cut was guaranteed to be precise to within 1/16". Materials: Custom-cut mirror Cordless drill Counter-sink bit Brass screws Tung oil finish Paint brushes Rags Note: Cut sizes may vary. For exact measurements, please contact David Marks through his website -- information below under Resources. Safety alert: Always wear safety goggles or safety glasses when working with power-tools, saws, drills, routers, etc. Safety alert: Always wear protective gloves when working with wood stains and solvents. Steps: - Use a cordless drill and 1/16" bit to drill the four pilot holes that will hold the back panel in place.
- Use a counter-sink bit (figure A) to prepare the screw holes so that the screw heads will be flush with the wood surface.
- Once the mirror has been set in place on the lower rabbet cut in the frame, slide in the back panel (figure B).
- Secure the mirror by fastening the back panel in the frame using brass screws (figure C).
- Finally, apply a wood finish. For this piece a finish was selected that's made from a blend of tung oil, linseed oil and polyurethane. Using a paintbrush, apply the finish (figure D), then hand-rub it into the wood. Using about four coats will ensure a deep, rich appearance in the wood's color and grain pattern.
- Finising tip: It's a good idea to remove the mirror from the frame while the finish is being applied.
- Hanging tip: The completed wall-mirror will weigh about 25 pounds. Take that into account when buying the hardware for hanging it.
