Once the frame has been constructed, it's time to begin weaving the seat of the porch swing. Note: Project plans may be viewed with Materials: Cane strips Large container of water Upholstery tacks Stapler and staples - Soak the cane to make it pliable (figure A).
- Tack two strands of cane the middle of the center seat rail (figure B).
- Wrap the two strands twice around each side rail and pull the length of cane toward the opposite rail (figure C).
- At the end of each length, simply staple new cane to the old pair (figure D). Continue wrapping from side to side, twice around each post (figure E), until entire seat is covered horizontally.
- Next, begin cross-weaving. Pass over the first pair of cane strips and under the second pair, and continue alternating to the bottom (figure F).
- Bring cane back to top and switch weaving pattern. Go under the first pair, over the second pair and so forth (figure G).
- When a few rows have been woven, pull vertical rows tightly together (figure H). Continue weaving -- and alternating the rows -- until the entire seat has been woven.
