Wood is a rare but renewable resource that should be treated with great respect. That respect should be manifested in the way in which wood is grown and harvested, and the manner in which it is milled, handled and incorporated into the items that we use.
Here are a few tips from David Marks on selecting and working with fine woods: - When storing valuable hardwoods, make sure to store it in a dry place to prevent mold and fungi from contaminating it. To prevent infestation by pests such as termites and beetles, treat your air-dried woods with insecticides.
- Look for unique qualities of grain and color when selecting fine woods. There are times when a unique trait or visual quality, or even a structural imperfection (figure A), may serve as the inspiration for a particular woodworking project.
- In an earlier episode, a bark inclusion -- where back has grown into the cambium layer of the wood -- served as a jumping-off point for creation of a stylized Japanese sitting bench (figure B).
- Similarly, spalting -- which is essentially a type of zone-line decay -- served to add visual interest to a wood veneer used in a demilune table (figure C).
