The eye of an artist can see the beautiful object hiding in a rough block of wood.
When you look at a chunk of maple, can you see a beautiful vase hiding inside? Dave Hout can, and in this episode of Woodturning Basics, he teaches Jane Lueders the woodturning magic used to create this beautiful work of art. Hout has been turning wood for more than 25 years, and as the vice-president of the American Association of Wood Turners, he travels around the country teaching the secrets of the wood turner's craft. As he will demonstrate, making this vase -- which is teardrop-shaped, delicately balanced and hollow inside -- isn't as tough as it looks, even for a beginner.
