Host Amy Devers applies a two-tone, wood grain laminate to the wall clock. She uses water-based contact cement to adhere the laminate to the substrate. She presses the laminate into place along the edge with a j-roller.

Wood Grain LaminateNote: Laminate comes in so many different colors and patterns (figure A). It comes in 4' x 8' sheets and it starts at about $50 and runs into the hundreds for some of the more luxurious laminates. - Cut all the pieces down to the size you need.
- Spread an even coat of the contact cement onto the laminate using a paint trim roller.
Note: The laminate will be adhered with water-based contact cement. Think of contact cement like you would a heavy-duty rubber cement. You paint it on both surfaces and let it tack up and then the pieces bond on contact. For this reason, you need to cut all of your pieces oversized. So when you put it on, you are going to have an overhang that can be trimmed off with a laminate trimmer. - Next, apply it to the MDF (figure B) and let both dry for approximately an hour.
- Carefully place the laminate over it (figure C). You need to be careful because it bonds instantly. Once the laminate is in position, work your way around the clock pressing it down. Use clear packing tape to better hold the laminate down around the curves.
- Press it into place along the edge with a "J" roller (figure D).
- Trim the excess off with the laminate trimmer. The baring helps guide you around the edges (figure E) to insure you take off just the right amount.
- Spread a coat of contact cement onto the face of the clock and let it dry for approximately half an hour.
- Before you press the piece into place, put down some brown craft paper along the centerline you drew before. The paper will act as a barrier so you can get the laminate into position.
- Once it is lined up, remove the paper and use the "J" roller again for an even bond.
- Trim off the excess (figure F).
- Put a coat of paint on the back.
