In this final segment, the china display has been completely assembled and the shelves and side-supports attached (figure A). Next, some final sanding will further beautify the wood surface. Finally, a tung-oil finish is applied to bring out the grain and warm tones of the wood. Materials: Sanding block; 220-grit sandpaper Hollow-chisel mortising bit Ebony stock for caps Mahogany stain Paintbrushes Clean rags Protective rubber gloves Safety Alert: Always wear safety goggles or safety glasses when working with wood, saws, drills, routers, etc. Safety Alert: Always wear protective gloves when working with wood stains and solvents.
- Before applying a wood finish to the china display, a sanding block with some 220-grit sandpaper is used to remove any rough spots on the wengae and flush the ends of the brass dowels with the surface of the wood (figure B).
- Once sanding is complete, holes are drilled in the four corners of the frame (figure C) for mounting the display to the wall. The holes are countersunk so that the mounting screws may be concealed.
- Ebony caps will be used to cover the screw-holes for the mounting screws. The ebony caps are milled so that they are 3/8" square and beveled around their visible edge (figure D).
- In order to mount the ebony caps, a square hole will need to be cut in the wengae frame. A hollow-chisel mortising bit is used to define the edges of the square hole (figure E), and a hand-chisel is used to pare out a recess into which the cap will fit.
- The final step is to add the wood finish. A red mahogany stain (figure F) deepens the tone on the mahogany plywood as well as the wengae sections.
The open-frame construction of the finished display has an airy feel, making an ideal backdrop for delicate china pieces. The symmetrical stepped-down effect of the curved wengae frame and side pieces give the piece a somewhat Asian feel. The warm red tones of the mahogany provide a contrasting backdrop for display pieces.
Mounting Tip: After installing the mouting screws, don't affix the ebony caps with glue. Instead, use doublestick tape to mount them in their recessed cutouts. In that way, they can be removed to access the mounting screws if the display ever needs to be moved to a new location.
