With the base assembly and veneer tabletop complete, the final phase of the occasional-table project is attachment of the top to the base, and application of a wood finish.
- In most instances, figure-8 metal fasteners (figure A) are recommended for securing a tabletop to a base assembly. The metal fasteners are designed to accommodate the movement of the wood when it expands or contracts because of changes in environmental humidity. However in this case, because the veneer is glued to the plywood substrate, it will not move. Plywood does not react to moisture the way that solid wood does, and is considered to be a stable substrate.
- Apply yellow glue to the bottom of the tabletop (figure B) and the apron surfaces.
- Clamp the glued assembly with numerous clamps to provide even downward pressure (figure C), and let the table cure for several hours.
- For the finish, a blend of tung oil, linseed oil and polyurethane was selected. This finish soaks deeply into the wood and brings out the pattern of the grain (figure D). This finish also darkens the wood considerably. If you prefer a lighter finish, substitute a shellac or lacquer.
